I have had a problem with the most recent AFCD's and also AACD's. For some
reason, my Plextor drive tries to read them, then gives up and ejects them.
I have found that if I load Unit Control (which came with my Blizzard scsi
kit) and do a scsi bus reset before it ejects., then it will read the disc
without having to reset the computer.

I used to. But the bloody IDE broke on it so no bootup. Now I have a 1D.4
running a PPC and PIV via ZII busboard quite nicely

So far, I haven't had to ring them up at all, except on Saturday about
the billing problems they've been having (caused by BT,
incidentally... read on...). They were pretty helpful.

Localtel are essentially BT resellers. The same network, same
services, everything. Just 10% cheaper on normal calls than BT, and
free Internet at off-peak times.

That's not a problem. The licence for MUI doesn't require you to
register after a certain amount of use, unlike most other shareware

I gave up saying this years ago. It seems people are quite happy with
users paying for the programmers tools.

Without going to the relative merits of ClassAct as a GUI system, the
licensing system is much fairer. It's the programmer that gets paid for
writing the software, so it's the programmer that pays the licence for

That was the assumption, but I don't believe they actually found out
where the leak happened.

what are the symptoms on an a1200 if you do not have a rev.1d1?  i have

But that's not going to happen with most software, is it? There may be

The OS comes with a GUI built in, but it's not a particularly attractive
one. Yes, MUI is a vital component of the software that uses it. Just as
AHI is a vital component of the software that uses *that*, or CGX, or
ClassAct, etc. The programmer may not have to use that particular GUI,
but it does make their software nicer to look at and use. :)

Okay, but where are they based? BT have engineers all over the
country. If there was a problem with my phone line, how long would it
take LocalTel engineers to come all the way up from England (i
presume that's where they are) and fix it? Or would BT handle that?

That's it, you see, I'm not sure. Since it's BT's lines, and
equipment, you'd think BT would sort out problems with it, but I'm not
too sure. Maybe Localtel pay BT engineers to go out? I just don't
know, but I can try and find out if you like.

I emailed them a while back trying to get the same answer out of them,
but never got a response (when i say a "while", I mean just after they
were starting up). Which is why I'm still on BT.

You could try Blittersoft, I got a replacement DF0 (high density) for my
A1200 from them less than a year ago, at the time they did A4000
drives as well.

That depends on what you want to do. I've yet to see an IDE scanner,
and IDE CD writers are far less useful than SCSI ones (even with an
enhanced IDE interface). Then you have to start adding splitters if you
want more than two devices, whereas SCSI controllers can handle up to
fifteen devices.

That usually means the drive is unable to read the filesystem. It
happens to me with badly scratched CDs or unfixed CDRs. Since it happens
with CDs from various sources, it sounds like your drive is faulty or
the lens is dirty.

By doing that, you're forcing the drive ot have another go at reading

Hardly surprising since the quality of the ISP has bugger all to do with
connection speeds. That's down to the quality of the telephone

I have the BJC-620.

It will work but I am not sure how well with the WB drivers as I bought TP7
to handle it.
I also know that the 620 is SLOW and I have been told that it is twice as
fast as the 600/610, which must be pathetic.
The thing I like about the printer is the individual ink cells. Run out of
one colour and just replace it without having to throw out good unused ink in the
other cells.
I also don't mind being able to print at 720x720 when I need to.

I'm having problems sending my mate 'Steve Pike' an e-mail
using Microdot II (version 1.1, that came with netconnect2).
I am using 'Free4all.co.uk' which I have never had a problem with
and he is using 'Connectfree.co.uk'.

When I try to send an e-mail it bounces saying that 'it doesn't
accept 8bitmime data, or something like that.  Have I changed something
that I shouldn't.  Should I reinstall the software :(   Help!!!!

Hello,

Since upgrading to 3.5 i have noticed that sometimes i can not eject zip
discs from the drive, but this only happens sometimes. eg. I put a disc in
with my workbench backup in and will eject, if i do later it seems to have
a paddy and will not eject the disc until i totally power down and restart
the system.

If i go back to the os 3.0 installation though this never happens.

Anyone else had similar probs and solutions??

DMS wont touch it, or any of the other dearchivers on the CD :-(
The files are SFX archives. the readme file says:

there any other way of paying (none credit card) which will get me
registered quickly (I have decided to register (finally :-) )now because
MUI v4 has yet to appear or have any dev news)

There are some timing problems associated with it. This might mean
that you don't get problems when you don't have so many motherboard

IRC is Internet Relay Chat, and is a way of chatting to other people over
the Internet in real time. AmIRC is, imho, the best IRC client on any
platform. There are alternatives for the Amiga, but you might as well
start with the best :) I don't know what version is supplied with NC3, but
3.3 is the latest version, you can download it from http://www.vapor.com

I would recommend connecting to a DALNet server, and joining a
channel there. Here's a few commands to get you going, just type them
as they appear, once you've connected to a server:

/join #channelname  - allows you to join a channel (try #Amiga,
#AmIRC, or #whatever-you-like-really, it's up to you :)
/nick nickname        - allows you to change your "nick", the name
you're known by on IRC
/part #channelname - leave the channel

You'll pick up other commands as you go along, just ask someone,
they'll be glad to help out :)

You could also try joining an Arcnet or Undernet server. See which
network you prefer :)

ARCNet is a good as it gets Network, most chat networks are run by morons who

None, some networks were started just to pirate amiga stuff.

Dalnet, and Galaxy are two of the worst warez nets about too, shame, seeing
as its where most of the amiga users 'hang out'

Your dead right, I've seen many people from mailing lists join arcnet, get
versioned, and leave because they have a pirate amirc.

I dont always agree that versioning is a good thing to do, but in our
current amiga shareware climate I think we should do more to protect our
shareware authors, I know I do.

I can be found on most nights, in #Amiga, and #AmigaCafe (the AmiBench
channel)

Personally, I don't use it because I find it boring, there are only Amiga
channels there (that I've seen), and at the times I usually connect it's
pretty empty. Nothing to do with your stand on piracy, I've found the
same stand in other non-ARCNet Amiga channels.

Yes and No..

My A600 is used for theatrical perposes and its got an '030 under the
hood to give it the grunt, along with 32Mb of ram. Yes, you can use the
3.1 romfile from the A2000, in theory.

Actally you could even use the image ripped from an A1200/4000 or
anything for that matter.

The problem is that using the Romfile isn't as easy as it was back in
the days of using WB2.0 over WB 1.3/1.2

Most romkick software was written back in the days of os 1.3 and
doesn't like os 2.0.x. This is complicated further by the fact that All
romkick software written to kick os 3.0 / 3.1 during development relys
on the machine having atleast 512k of fast ram, the a500 had it, the
2000 had it.

The A600, doesn't as standard.

My advice, If you have a real use for you're a600, Buy the Romchip. It
makes it so much easier.

BTW, 2.04 rom does have scsi.device handleing, but it doesn't wait long
enough for some HD's to return a signal, as such wont kick up the HD. I
had the same problem, and I permanantly fixed it by getting a 3.1 rom,
but until that point, I found if I forced the computer to
Guru/Crash/Software error, The HD would bootup after the crash! I used
an old disk that has an intro on it that Caused my A600 to crash
straight after booting the disk to give it a little kick along when I
turned it on. You could also build a bootdisk that runs HDtools on
bootup (This will activate the HD and the OS will then find it) the
rest of the Startup-sequence you then change all the system assigns to
the HD the Execute the Startup-sequence on the HD. Voila!

in hell it could sell the computer. That Killer Application is its

Multi Billion dollar spending would proably goet somewhere, But If
things go the way they Did at Commodore it would soon be all for
nothing.

Get you're Amigas out there.
Create ART,
Design a car,
Make a film,
make music,
Go into a shop and say I WANT A 32Gig HD for My Amiga, IT uses IDE so
you're commonplace PC parts will go into My Machine.
Talk about your Amiga!
Sell one to a family member, and show them how to use it.
Sell one to a freind and show them how to use it.
Give one to someone, and show them.
Give/Donate/ lease one to a local school, show them the cool things
that can easily with it and put it straight onto video! Show them
ScalaMM400 Etc.

Think you're making money for the big guys and don't want to waste
you're effort for someone elses gain? OK,

I bought a Voodoo 3 for my PC GAMES MACHINE for $aud200 the other day.
Wheres the Amiga one?
How much would it cost?

Ok, I get the impression that you're tring to use a A4000 FD in an
A1200. The Idea may seem good but you should ahve researched the
subject better. The A1200 has an odd way of handling the FD than the
A4000 and it gets a little wonky on the RDY pin on the back of the
drive. An A4000 cable wont fix this as it is just a standard Floppy
cable, Identical to the ones used in PCs.

The Simple answer is to take the drive back. Hope you can get the money
back.

The High Densitiy floppy drives Invert its RDY (ready) Signal twice as
fast as the standard FD, the Amiga can detect this quite nicely, but
the A1200 can only read data off the drive at 170K per second, Half as
fast as the HD drive will throw data at the Amiga. Also, the A1200s
hardware is only designed to handle the standard drives, and as such
only expects them. There is was of making it find the drive, But if you
had never heard of the RDY pin before, or you don't know how to find
which one it is, then Don't even think about it. these methods are
Hacky at best. At least the A4000's HD has been SLOWED so it can
trasnfer the data at a rate that the Amiga can read it.

But you would have been better Buying a Catweasel and A Standard PC HD,
seriously!

But if you really want to use the A4000's Drive, Go to the HARD/HACK
and HARD/DRIVERS Directories on Aminet, theres plenty on literature to
help you along the way, But its not for the faint of heart.

Thanks Neil for forwarding my request since my Amiga's net connection
left a lot to be desired; just hope it has nothing to do with my
escapade with this floppy drive last night - well it connects okay;
just everything is slower than usual...  Also I hope it has nothing to
do with me hitting my modem in anger! :) Never mind that....

   ....mind this! :)

To elaborate on my very hasty message yesterday:

I have purchaced an A4000 floppy drive; one of the slightly taller
ones; and it is the standard Commodore Chinnon supplied drive.  The
problem, two really.  As usual anything related to upgrading my A1200T
is an arse. :)

I /did/ have a longer floppy lead but it was a really crap one; the
connectors fell apart when you wished to remove them; not a handy
thing.  This has obviously knackered the first connector where DF0:
would plug in.  Typical.  Which leaves on connector at the other end
which has some wires twisted; I guess for a PC drive selection; because
it doesn't look like the same wires the Amiga needs twisted.

Now, the problem is that it will recognise DD (879/839/720K) disks;
great, but the point of me buying this was to read HD disks
(1760/1440K); not too much IMHO.  Well I have removed the face plate to
check the HD detection pin was still there; it is.   And it works
(pushes up and down).  The jumper at the back is configured as DS0
(DF0) as far as i can see.

I have been able to use an A600s floppy cable which is longer than the
A600 variety; and ran the lead out to the back of my tower just enough
so i can test it.  Pin 1 (red strip) is conencted at the top and pin 1
on the floppy (away from the power connection) any reversal means that
the floppy light stays on indicating that the floppy is not wired
properly.

When the Amiga 1200 is switched on; drive whirrs up, and the hard disk
boots, sometimes i get a requester saying 'Please insert Df0' or
similar.  Once Workbench is booted, DF0: is available.

Stick a HD disk in to be formatted at Amiga HD: 1760K (1.76Mb), the
format requster just shows DF0: as 880K capacity! :(  PC-Task doesn't
recognise HD disks and neither does ShapeShifter! :((  Is it do with
having PC0 and PC1 set-up a 720K MS-DOS drivers??

Do I need an A2000/3000/4000 floppy lead?

How can I solve this problem.  I'm gonna wire up my old DD DF0: when I
get back home because my Workbench refuses to work without DF0:
obviously, I'll just have to dangle it down the back. :)

You can not use an A4000 HD drive in an A1200 and expect everything to be
hunky dory.  IIRC the A4000 has extra circuitry on the m/b to control HD
drives, which is why HD disks are showing up as 880k.  Using an A4000 cable
will probably not make the blindest bit of difference ...

What you should have done is bought Power Computings A1200 HD drive
instead.  This comes with a software utility that patches the OS and allows
you to use HD disks fully - without the patch you cannot write to HD disks.

Can anyone help with a connection between WIN 98 and AMIGA via serial
using TCP.

I want to use this type of connection so that I can play a link game on
doom and quake which dont support direct null modem link.

I have downloaded a null modem driver from the siamies web page
allthough it does say for win95.  The main problem is that using this
driver windows is still tring to dial out.  It wont let me attempt to
link using null modem unless I put in a phone number.

Miami is happy to attemp a null modem tcp link so I dont think the
problem is on the amiga end.

What you need to do is to set up a "Login Script" in Miami that says
something like "Send 'RING\nRING' Wait 'ATA' Send 'CONNECT 115200'".
Then set up "Dial-up Server" on the PC, and set it running on the
Null-modem.
THEN "Dial-in" using Miami on the Amiga, and voila! one working TCP/IP
connection!

AFAIK ADoom supports Null Modem connection, but whether ID's Doom does
is another, note you'll need the full 7pin Null Modem cable not the
simpler 3 wire variety.  For that you wouldn't need to use TCP/IP
protocols; so long as the data is what both versions of DOOM recognise,
it seems silly just to package the 'packets' (not that they really are
true packets) into TCP/IP formats.

If however DOOM doesn't support Null Modem; you may need to use
Ethernet connections or via the Internet, with a Modem on PC and Amiga;
which in that case you would start using the Internet's standard
protocol which is TCP/IP.

Both dooms do support direct link but the protocol does not match.

I have been thinking about getting ethernet cards for both machines but
I cant afford it right now.  Im hoping that a serial link will work for
now.

Does this mean I do not need to bother using the make connection script
in windose. Where do I find Dial-up server. I dont recall coming up
against this option. Can I assume that the null modem driver I have
installed is working fine on windose.

Dial-up Server's installed from "Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup ->
Communications"

And unless you hear anything else, it's working. The dynamite test'd be to
use Hyperterminal (Eugh!) on the PC and NComm or Term on the 'miggy to talk
over a simple terminal session.

Mabey it is because the packet does not match.  All I know is that
LinuxDoom which amiga doom was compiled from does not use the same
direct link protocol as Pc Doom.

Some did, it was a factory fitted option.  Most of the ones sold didn't have
them.

I watched as Jarmo Laakkonen hammered "[afb] YAM PPC patch is a fake!" out
on their keyboard...

Not that there is any point, YAM works just on 68k, it doesn't need a
massive amount of speed...why try to make it work on a PPC other than for a
future G4-native version?

Looks more like just a hoax to me, but I'd be deeply suspicious of that .pch
file...try running an file identification program over it, or a virus
checker.

I can't say YAM2 has ever caused any problems.

Hello,

Anyone here know if I can run Picasso96 and CybergraphX on the one
machine ?

What I mean is, is it allright to have CyberGraphX V3 installed (it's
what I'm running now) and then to installed Picasso96 ?  I'm guessing
that all I would need to do to switch between them is to choose either
of them as my "Monitor" ?  Right ?

The reason I want to do this is because at the moment running
Wipeout2097 on CyberGraphX V3 results in me getting about 5 frames/sec
in 320x240 :-(  and thats with a PowerPC 604e 233Mhz and a
Cybervision64/3D!   A quick trawl across the internet revealed that
CyberGraphX version 3 is to blame, and that Picasso96 or CyberGraphX
version 4 would fix it ... think I'll go the cheaper option as I'm
skint at the moment.

A good point, but do they still sell them? I've noticed that they have
disappeared from Power's web site and adverts. It would be a shame if they
have stopped doing them as I'd have thought demand for such a device would
be very strong right now.

Yes, you just need two mount entries, like when sharing a floppy disk
between PC0:/DF0: and you can get mount entries/tools from the aminet.
As you don't get any software with the drive, you may as well go for a
pc/mac supplier - dabs direct does them for about =A3110 inc vat.

Surely they wouldn't have the Blizzard PPC cards as they claim, DCE are
only making the BVisions and CyberPPC/Visions aren't they. And at
UKP550 there would be little point in buying one anyway, thats about
the same price for a good G4.

Maybe they'll "send them out when they get the stocks in from DCE".

Try getting HiDensity of Aminet, it gives you a HF0: mountfile, its meant=
 to let you use HD disks in an Escom 1200, but might help you

REALLY want a bit more power than this poor ol` 030 :-)

No, Power don't sell them anymore.  It seems the only viable option
(but ultimately the best) is to get a Catweasel controller and PC
floppy drive.  I think I'll get a Catweasel and HD floppy drive, and
then connect my Amiga DD floppy drive as DF0:.  Catweasel configures
its drives as PF0 or something; what is it.  Is the Catweasel
compatible with PC-Task?  I know it is on ShapeShifter is; is Fusion??

It's Big (12" per side), it's square, it's (VERY) Floppy, It goes into my
BBC Master series... It's a 12" Floppy Disk, right?

AFAIK, you cannot run both simultaneously - although you can have both
installed. That is, you cannot have both the CGX and P96 monitor drivers
active at the same time. The solution is to move one of the drivers out of
the DEVS:monitors drawer. When you want to swap, exchange the drivers and
reboot.

I did much better than this on the same setup. What ENV variables have you
got set up for CGX and what size texture cache are you using for WipEout?

WipEout won't work with a CV64/3D and P96. At least, it won't for me. I
don't think Warp3D supports that set up.

I have never heard of 12" myself either; i`m sure 8" was the biggest
